Amnesty Sees Link Between SUARAM Shakedown, Scorpene Scandal

The Malaysian Insider

Global rights watchdog Amnesty International raised suspicion today over the timing of Putrajaya’s sudden interest in SUARAM’s operations, noting that authorities began probing the group soon after it revealed that a close associate of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had sold Malaysian naval secrets to France.

The revelation was made by French lawyer Joseph Breham, who is acting for Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) in the ongoing inquiry on the Scorpene submarine scandal in Paris, during a May 30 press conference in Bangkok.

“Amnesty is concerned that the recent government actions against SUARAM appear to be linked to the organisation’s legitimate work, in particular a corruption case which it has brought before the French courts.

“The government began these actions against SUARAM four weeks after the organisation disclosed new information from documents made available by the French public prosecutor’s office, which implicate Malaysian officials in the corruption allegations,” AI said in a statement here.

SUARAM recently came under close scrutiny of the Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM) due to its foreign funding sources, and the government agency said earlier this week that it plans to charge the activist group for its “misleading accounts”.

The human rights NGO has been actively pursuing the Scorpene scandal in the French courts, determined to expose alleged government corruption in the multibillion purchase of the submarines in 2009 and possibly reopen the murder case of Mongolian model Altantuyaa Shaariibuu, which has been linked to the deal.

In April this year, the Tribunal de Grand Instance in Paris began its inquiry into SUARAM’s claim that the French naval firm DCNS had paid some RM452 million as a bribe to Malaysian officials to obtain a contract for two submarines. SUARAM had filed the complaint with the French courts in 2009.

In the May 30 press conference, Breham had revealed that a classified government document on the Malaysian navy’s evaluation of the Scorpene submarines it was then planning to buy had been sold by Terasasi (Hong Kong) Ltd to DCNS for RM142 million.

Abdul Razak Baginda, a former think-tank head who was at the centre of the 2006 investigation into Altantuya’s murder, is listed as a director of Terasasi with his father, Abdul Malim Baginda. Abdul Razak is said to be a close associate to Najib.

“It was a secret document by the Malaysian navy, an evaluation for the order of the submarines, which is a highly confidential report,” Breham had said at the conference.

Amnesty recalled that on July 3, a little past four weeks after the revelation by SUARAM’s lawyer was made, the NGO suddenly received a visit from the CCM with a notice of inspection.

A few months later, the group became the subject of much “harassment and intimidation” from the Malaysian authorities, it added.

Amnesty added that the harassment “appears to be a concerted, multi-departmental government campaign against SUARAM, one of Malaysia’s leading human rights groups”.

“The Malaysian government should respect SUARAM’s right as a human rights organisation to seek and receive funding, rather than abuse its power to intimidate human rights defenders,” the group said.

Mat Zain: Musa Hassan’s Admission Over Anwar’s DNA Proves False Evidence Claims

The Malaysian Insider

Tan Sri Musa Hassan’s recent admission that he took blood samples from Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s “black eye” probe for DNA testing in Sodomy I proves he had helped fabricate evidence during the 1998 case, a former senior police officer said today.

Ex-KL CID chief Datuk Mat Zain Ibrahim, who was the investigating officer during the famous “black eye” incident, had previously accused Musa (picture) of taking the samples without the doctor’s and Anwar’s approval to convict the latter of sodomy.

In an open letter to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar today, Mat Zain pointed out that Musa’s admission during his May interview with Malaysiakini was enough to kickstart investigations against the former IGP.

He said he was not surprised by the ensuing silence from Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail following Musa’s admission, repeating allegations that it was the Attorney-General himself who was the main culprit behind the fabrication of evidence leading to Anwar’s imprisonment.

“Musa’s admission on May 31, although brief, was enough to validate all that I have reported against the two of them (Musa and Abdul Gani) before,” he said in the open letter released to the media today.

Mat Zain has repeatedly accused both Abdul Gani and Musa, who was then Bukit Aman’s assistant criminal investigation chief, of deliberately falsifying evidence during Sodomy I and Anwar’s black-eye probe.

In the interview with Malaysiakini in May, Musa had admitted that he had used Anwar’s blood samples for DNA testing on the mattress in Sodomy I, but stressed that this had been according to procedure.

According to the published interview, Musa had explained that the samples were taken after Anwar’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, told the BBC that her husband may have been injected with the HIV while he was under police custody.

“When she made such allegations, I had to make a report as I was afraid the police force was being slandered. Under the law, the police or doctors could ask for blood samples to be tested.

“I took it to check for AIDS. It is not as though I cheated. All this was done according to procedure,” Musa was quoted as saying by the news portal.

He later added: “Yes, I did use the blood for DNA tests. I used it to test on the mattress.

“I have to conduct a full investigation as the allegations in the book ‘50 reasons why Anwar cannot be PM’ was extensive as there was the affair at the Tivoli Villa and other allegations.”

In his letter today, Mat Zain predicted that Musa would soon find himself trapped by his own words.

“But I am not worried if he (Musa) alone has to bear the consequences of his own actions. Unfortunately, these revelations of his would likely also bring shame to some of our police officers who have worked with integrity,” he said.

Mat Zain urged Ismail to consider reopening the corruption case against former Economic Planning Unit (EPU) chairman Tan Sri Ali Abul Hassan, which he said had been forcibly ordered closed during the 2000 power abuse allegations against former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The matter, he said, was yet another conspiracy involving both Abdul Gani and Musa, both of whom he claimed had made conflicting statements in the press regarding the probe on Dr Mahathir.

Mat Zain pointed out that although the police had not been the authority investigating Ali Abul, it was the KL police who had taken the then Anti-Corruption Agency’s (ACA) investigation papers for examination while they were probing Dr Mahathir for power abuse.

“What I am saying here is that the ACA themselves had felt that the case against Ali Abul should not have been closed by the AGC (Attorney-General’s Chambers), as they were still in mid-probe when the orders to shut the matter were made.

“In short, the closure of the case against Ali Abul was done under extraordinary circumstances and creates suspicion among those who were probing the matter,” he said.

Mat Zain added in his letter to Ismail that both the issues he had raised — Musa’s admission, and Musa’s and Abdul Gani’s “suspicious” role in Ali Abul’s case — were enough reason for the police to open investigations on the duo.

Filem Hina Rasullullah :Ribuan Umat Islam Menyertai Himpunan Bantahan di Hadapan Kedutaan US

KeadilanDaily

“Kita orang Islam hormat agama lain.

“Kita perlu tunjukkan semangat setiakawan.

Aktress Filem “Innocence Of Muslims” Saman Penerbit

Third-gen Audi A3 Sportback to surface in Paris

Coming to next week’s Paris motor show is the new-generation Audi A3 Sportback, with an extensive list of equipment both standard and optional. The five-door A3 is 35 mm longer than its three-door sibling. With length, width and height measurements of 4.31, 1.78 and 1.43 metres respectively, it’s only slightly bigger overall than the Sportback before it, but wheelbase is longer by 58 mm.

This provides more headroom and legroom, and a 1,220 litre load capacity with the rear seats folded (380 litres with rear seats up). It’s also 90 kg lighter than the last one due to the use of high-strength steel for the body and aluminium for the bonnet, wings and front subframe.

Sitting on the MQB platform, the Sportback features McPhersons at the front and four-link at the rear, with two sport suspensions available that lower the body by 15 and 25 mm.

Three engines will be introduced initially: 1.4 and 1.8 litre TFSIs (122 and 180 PS) and a 2.0 litre TDI (150 PS), but four more will follow, including a 105 PS 1.2 TFSI, a 140 PS version of the 1.4 TFSI (this one features cylinder deactivation), a 184 PS version of the 2.0 TDI and a compact, efficient 1.6 TDI (3.8 litres per 100 km).

Also forthcoming is a 110 hp TCNG engine which runs on Audi e-gas, a fuel produced by the company itself in a sustainable manner. Due to arrive next year, the engine emits a low 30 grams of CO2 per km. An e-tron plug-in hybrid version of the Sportback will surface in 2014.

Standard transmission for all is a six-speed manual, with Audi’s dual-clutch S tronic an option. The handbrake on the previous model is replaced by an electronic parking brake.

The 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TDI versions get, as an option, quattro permanent all-wheel drive with a newly-developed multi-plate clutch.

Other options include steering wheel shift paddles and xenon plus headlamps with LED rear and daytime-running lamps. LED headlamps are expected soon.

There are 13 exterior colours to choose from – three solids, eight metallics and two pearl-effect finishes. There also are S line sport and exterior packages to make the Sportback that little bit more exclusive.

How much? The 1.2 TFSI will wear a €22,500 (RM90k) price tag when it hits German showrooms in February, while UK order books are already open with a starting price of £19,825 (RM98k).

Autocar says the new S3 Sportback will also debut alongside it in Paris, and that the hot five-door A3 will have a 2.0 litre 280 PS four-cylinder unit that can propel it to 100 km/h from a standstill in 5.5 seconds.

Ford Fiesta Beta and XTR special editions introduced in Malaysia, priced at RM92,888 and RM90,888!

Adding some spice to the Ford Fiesta range in Malaysia are two special edition variants: the Fiesta Beta and Fiesta XTR, which have been introduced and are on display at Ford’s Mid Valley Megamall roadshow throughout this weekend. Both are based on the 1.6 litre Sport trim and are priced at RM92,888 and RM90,888 respectively.

The Fiesta Beta commemorates the second anniversary of Fiesta sales in Malaysia. It’s only available in Panther Black, and features a bold red racing stripe with white outlines. Adding to the 1.6 litre Sport’s list of equipment are two-tone red and black leather-trimmed seats, 3M-tinted windows, chrome door lining, scuff plates, special carpet mats and an iPod cable. On the outside, the Beta gets a bodykit, sports decals, and daytime-running lights.

The Fiesta XTR inherits the same goodies as the Fiesta Beta, minus the DRLs, chrome door lining and 3M tint. While the Beta has a red and black theme, this one has a blue theme, evident in its twin body stripes, seats and dashboard trim. ‘Sapphire’ decals and carpet mats are also exclusive to the XTR, and Aurora Blue and Cool White are the colours on offer. Both the Beta and XTR have seven airbags.

Daihatsu Ayla 1.0L eco-car launched in Indonesia

The start of the Indonesia international Motor Show saw the arrival of the Daihatsu Ayla hatchback, as well as that of its Toyota sibling, the Agya. The two debutants are set to go head to head against the Mitsubishi Mirage, which also made its Indonesian debut at the show.

We’ll start with the Ayla – the five-door hatch, the company says, has been designed to meet the needs of car users in the country, working on the basis of being fuel efficient, spacious and affordable. If the shape looks a bit familiar, that’s because you’ve seen a mix of its lines on the Daihatsu A-Concept seen in last year’s IIMS as well as the e:S Mira.

There weren’t any specifications mentioned in the overall show brochure beyond stating that the little car – which measures in at 3,580 mm long, 1,600 mm wide and 1,510 mm tall – punches above its weight, offering a comfortable and spacious cabin, a minimum turning radius for easy maneouvreability in narrow streets and a high ground clearance “best suited to the way in Indonesia.”

Nothing a bit of digging around couldn’t solve. The Ayla is powered by a 997cc three-cylinder mill, the D26F-1KR-DE. The 69 kg aluminium-block unit, which is 10 kg lighter than the 1.0 litre cast-iron block equivalent, offers 65 hp at 6,000 rpm and a rather low-ish 87 Nm of twist at 3,600 rpm. As for drivetrain choices, it’s a five-speed manual and a four-speed auto for this little five-seater.

Three variants of the Ayla will go on sale in the Indonesian market, the entry-level Type D, medium specification Type M and range-topping Type X.

When they mean entry-level, they do mean entry-level – the Type D comes without air-conditioning and an audio system, to give you an idea of how affordable means omitting some of the mod-cons. It does mean however that the Ayla can be had for as low as Rp 75 million (RM24,100). Local content is claimed to be 84% for the car (and likewise, the Agya). As for colours, there are six choices on call for the car, three metallic and three solid.

The arrival of the little car does throw some conjecture about, especially with regards to Malaysia’s position as the perceived passenger car center for ASEAN.

For the longest time, Toyota/Daihatsu Indonesia (or Astra Toyota/Daihatsu, if you will) didn’t really sell passenger-style cars, working the beat with more “commercial-based” offerings like the Avanza and Innova. Daihatsu didn’t bother building the Sirion in Indonesia, instead importing Myvis from here and slapping on Daihatsu badging on them.

But the change is coming, and how – we first saw signs of this with the A-Concept, and now production of Toyota/Daihatsu passenger cars is concentrated in Thailand and Indonesia. The Japanese automaker has signalled its intent for Indonesia, stating that it aims to launch more than four models in the next four years as well as produce 300,000 units a year here.

Which leads to the question – has Perodua failed to grab an opportunity to be the small passenger green car hub for Toyota/Daihatsu in the region? The Ayla and Agya show that this might very well be the case, and we might also well be looking at the new Viva-replacement.
